WASHINGTON D.C. and the CHERRY BLOSSOMS
Monday, March 28 –
Wednesday, April 6
Monday, March 28
Pack your bag, put a
few leftover Easter eggs in the carry on and head for one of our convenient
departure points in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Our first day’s destination is South Bend. We’ll have a quick look at the campus of
Notre Dame before we check into our accommodations and enjoy our included
buffet dinner.
Tuesday, March 29
Bags out and
breakfast included. A bit of Indiana and
all of Ohio to cover as we make our way to the new Memorial at United 93 (9/11)
near Shanksville, PA. The new visitor
center just opened in the fall of 2015.
Dinner is included at Ed’s Steakhouse in Bedford, just across the
parking lot from the Fairfield Inn.
Wednesday, March 30
Bags out and
breakfast included. We’re off and
running early today with Gettysburg as our mid-morning destination. The Eisenhower farm is our first attraction,
followed by the 360° mural, Cyclorama and the museum to the battle. Following lunch, our favorite Gettysburg
guides join us for a driving tour of the Battlefield. We’ve got several stops to make with emphasis
on Minnesota and Wisconsin’s roll in the “turning point of the Civil War”. The site of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address
concludes our tour. We’re on to our
accommodations for the next 5 nights, the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center, just
across the Potomac from D.C. Dinner
included!
Thursday, March 31
Breakfast
included. Our local guides, Brooks and
George, join us each morning for breakfast and our short ride into the city –
they’re with us for four full days in your capital city. Please be aware that crowds, weather,
appointments, etc., may change the order of our inclusions. I will add; “there is no other tour offered
that is as inclusive as Home Spun’s”.
Today we begin at the WWII Memorial, continue to the Washington
Monument, Ford’s Theater and the Peterson House before an included lunch and
tour of the Capitol. The Library of
Congress and Supreme Court (exterior) take us to an early dinner followed by
the Pentagon and Air Force Memorials.
Friday, April 1
Breakfast
included. We begin with the White House,
Oval Office, old Executive Office Building and the Blair House (all exterior)
and a walk thru Lafayette Park. Next up in order: the Korean, Lincoln and Viet
Nam Memorials. Late morning finds us at
your choice of Smithsonian buildings for lunch (on your own) and about 4 hours
to enjoy the Smithsonian. (Note: You might also visit the Holocaust Museum
during this time). The largest Catholic
Church, the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (your jaw will drop at the
beauty), Martin Luther King, Jr. and FDR Memorials round out our day. We’ll return to the Hilton for dinner on our
own.
NOTE TO ALL: By now you should have realized there is a bit
of walking in D. C. – Doesn’t matter whose tour it is – you walk! Some folks decide to skip an attraction and
stay on the bus – no problem.
Comfortable shoes are a must.
Saturday, April 2
Breakfast
included! We’ll begin at the Marine
Memorial (Iwo Jima) and then board Home Spun’s chartered tram for our tour of
Arlington National Cemetery. The Kennedy
grave sites, amphitheater, Audie Murphy grave, Challenger Memorial and, of
course, the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns are all stops. George Washington and Robert E. Lee
worshipped at Christ’s Church in Alexandria – you’ll have a photo op in their
pews on our visit. Lunch is included at
the Mt. Vernon Inn, followed by the introductory movie and the narrated tour of
Washington’s home, Mt. Vernon (grounds tour is self-guided). A driving tour of historic Alexandria gets us
to shopping and dining on your own in the historic district along the
waterfront – then to the hotel.
Sunday, April 3
Breakfast
included. The Tidal Basin is ringed with
those famous cherry trees; the Jefferson Memorial is on the Tidal Basin and is
our first stop. More blossoms on our
drive to Haines Point. The Navy,
National Law Enforcement and Building Memorials precede our lunch (on your own)
at historic Union Station. Walk off
lunch at the Kennedy Center then follow Wisconsin Avenue thru Georgetown to the
National Cathedral for their organ and chimes service (this is special). Back to the Hilton for dinner on your own
(and packing).
Monday, April 4
Bags out and
breakfast included! Finally you get to
sit down and stay there as we head into the mountains of West Virginia and our
lunch stop in Morgantown. The Drury Inn
in Dayton, Ohio has “Kick Back” from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. – complimentary cocktails
with hot and cold food – enjoy, you’ve earned it!
Tuesday, April 5
Home Spun started
visiting the Air Force Museum in Dayton some 20+ years ago (my uncle Bob was a
docent). We’re here to walk thru the
early Air Force One’s of FDR, Truman, Eisenhower and the plane that brought
JFK’s body back from Dallas. You’ll also
have time for the rest of the museum (lunch and gift shop are on your
own). We’ll turn north at Indianapolis,
headed for the Hyatt on Chicago’s north side.
Cocktails and dinner are included at your leisure.
Wednesday, April 6
Bags out and
breakfast included. Now, aren’t you glad
you went? I’ll bet you had no idea how
interesting and beautiful your nation’s capital (and capitol) really are. Breaks and lunch will get you comfortably
home today.

we’re not promoting the consumption of Tennessee whisky ‘cause there’s no free
samples at Jack Daniels…but their story and history in Lynchburg are worth a
bit of our time this morning. Lunch is
on your own. Well, there were no highs
in Lynchburg, but we’ll get ours as we climb the hills of southeastern
Tennessee to our overnight in Chattanooga. Sunday,

to our lodging at Homewood Suites.
Dinner is included, too! Saturday,

NEW ORLEANS and the OLD SOUTH
Thursday,
March 10 – Sunday, March 20
Thursday,
March 10
Put down the
shovel and pack your bag…we’re off for 11 days of fun…with a bit of history
thrown in! Lunch is included along with
Drury Inn’s “Kick Back” (free food and drinks) in Collinsville, IL.
Friday,
March 11
Bags out and
breakfast included! Have your cameras
ready, there’s a photo stop at the Arch in St. Louis – and a break to follow at
the Golden Arches! Lunch is on your own
today and I’m making it fast food so we can pick up a bit of extra time for our
afternoon break at Graceland (Elvis’ home) in Memphis…still got those cameras
close by? Lodging tonight is in Jackson,
Mississippi, the capital city!
Saturday,
March 12
Bags out and
breakfast included! Most folks don’t
realize that the battle for Vicksburg and Gettysburg were at the same time. The difference being Vicksburg was a
siege. We’re joined by Myra Logue for
our narrated tour of the Vicksburg battlefield.
Lunch and a short drive have us in another historical city,
Natchez. Often called the “Athens of the
South”, Vicksburg was at one-time home to more millionaires than New York City
(when cotton was king). We’ll tour
several of those plantation homes before we enjoy a bit of real southern
cookin’ and charm in Natchez.
Sunday,
March 13
Bags out and
breakfast included! We’ve lined up work
for all of you this morning – have you ever picked cotton? Just kidding! But we are going to learn the
ins and outs of cotton picking on our plantation tour. We’ll do brunch on a casino riverboat before
we see Natchez in our rearview mirror (the boat is not cruising). It’s the Drury Inn in Lafayette for our
overnight and it’s one of the most fun nights on any Home Spun tour at Pont
Breaux’s Cajun Restaurant – wear your dancing shoes. We’re even buying the first drink (and
dinner, of course).
Monday,
March 14
Bags out and
breakfast included. Time for more
pictures…of alligators…on our included swamp cruise. We’re into New Orleans for lunch at the
Riverwalk before we enjoy a narrated tour of Blains Mardi Gras World; it’s
where they make the parade floats. Boy,
are you gonna get your eyes opened. Our
lodging is in the historic French Quarter for the next 3 nights. But hold on, we’ve got carriages picking you
up for a narrated tour of the Quarter and they’ll drop you off at the pier for
our included dinner cruise aboard the paddle wheeler, Natchez. How’s that for a fun day?
Tuesday,
March 15
Breakfast
included – NO bags out! This
morning we’re joined by another Home Spun Tours’ favorite, Michael, for our
narrated tour of this historic city.
There will be some walking, especially in the cemetery, yes, the
cemetery! Michael also knows his way
around a kitchen – he’s the lead chef for the New Orleans School of Cooking and
he’s cooking our lunch with insights that just may be the highlight of your
stay in the Crescent City. WWII history
this afternoon at the D-Day Museum, can’t wait to share Tom Hanks’ introductory
video presentation with you. The balance
of the day is free – dinner is on your own.
Wednesday,
March 16
No bags – No breakfast! Yes, I am kidding. I’ve got a coupon for beignets and coffee at
another New Orleans tradition, the Café de Monde (use it at your leisure
24-hours a day). Then enjoy a free day
in America’s most unusual city – your tour manager will point you in your desired
direction.
Thursday,
March 17 HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!
Bags out and
breakfast included! Our route follows
the Gulf Coast; I’ll show you the casinos in Biloxi on our way to beautiful Bellingrath
Gardens for a tour and lunch (there is some walking to see all of the
gardens). A drive through Mobile and
we’re on I-65 headed to Wind Creek Resort and Casino in Atmore, Alabama. Their unbelievable buffet dinner is included
(and so is a bit of free play in the casino if you’re interested – good luck!)
Friday,
March 18
Bags out and
breakfast included. Believe it or not,
today’s drive is the prettiest of the tour.
We’re headed to Nashville, The Drury Inn and the world’s longest running
radio show, The Grand Ole Opry!
Saturday,
March 19
Bags out and breakfast
included. The big cities of Louisville
and Indianapolis are just drops in the bucket to our destination –
Chicago! Tonight’s lodging is our
flagship hotel, the Hyatt in the Chicago suburb of Deerfield. Cocktails and dinner at your leisure are included.
Sunday,
March 20
Can you
remember seeing so much and having so much fun in just 11 days? That’s why we took you along and now it’s
time to take you home. Breaks, lunch and
a lot of drop offs conclude our last day on the road! |
